REX MARS ROCKET FIGHTER SHIP MARX GREAT BRITAIN REPRO BOX WORKS EXC SCARCE TOY. Here is a super rare 1951 wind-up Rex Mars Rocket Fighter in excellent plus shape. This is the scarcest by far of the Marx Rocket Fighter Series. It was only made for the British market by Marx. Rex Mars measures 12 inches long and is all tin litho. It functions with a winding key found on one side of the rocket which operates a clockwork spring. There is an on/off switch on the other side of the rocket. If you've ever heard one of these in action you'll remember the unique boing boing sound effect as it runs across the floor. It also has a sparking mechanism lodged under the rear tail fin which throws out sparks. As with all of the Rockets Fighters, the majority of the wear is found on the bottom high point where it could rub the operating surface. Couple that with light/thin paint application and bottom rubs are unavoidable unless the toy was never played with. This Rex Mars was played with lightly and still maintains a lovely gloss to the paint. Light wear with some minor scratches and litho loss to the bottom. The tail fin is a replacement, it still sparks. The repro box is very well made and has directions on each end flap. The only other example I could find was one sold at Bertoia Auction House on 9/25/09 it had an original box and sold for $4000.00 plus add in 20% Buyers Premium and tax and the toys was over $5000.00.
