WORLD WAR 1 ORIGINAL RELIEF POSTER DOUGLAS VOLK 1918 LARGE
Item Condition:
Excellent
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
Original 1918 lithograph was commissioned by the American Committee for Relief in the Near East, which was seeking to raise $30 million for relief work in Armenia, Greece, Syria and Persia (Iran). Supporting fundraising for civilian populations in the Near East suggesting the benevolent, international influence of American democracy during the First World War. The image features Columbia, the female personification of the Republic, wielding a sword to protect a defenseless child. Artist is Douglas Volk, known primarily as a portrait painter and muralist who was also a co-founder of the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts. The poster states They Shall Not Perish. The poster is framed from what is showing it's 37 x 24.5 it maybe more since the rest of it is in the frame. Excellent condition, strong colors, there looks to be a fold on the right side and a possible repair, it's hard to tell. I never took it out of the frame. A beautiful example of this over 100 year old poster. Gotten from a WW1 veteran over 20 years ago. I took the photos in the natural sunlight and a few indoors to get a better look at it. There is some unavoidable glare, the inside pictures are a better representation of this poster. I read where there were only 8,000 copies ever produced. How many have survived over the last 100 plus years ago. The simple large frame is in exc condition with a small bum at the bottom. It is quite heavy. An unusual and historic poster, referring to the genocide against Armenia. I had one other of these but, it's sold. I have a different WW1 poster also listed for sale plus other advertising and signs. PICK UP ONLY IN EAST WINDSOR NJ 08520. Please check out my other items. Please ask any question that you may have. Thank you, Dave
