PIEDMONT CIGARETTE TOBACCO DOUBLE-SIDED PORCELAIN FOLDING DECK CHAIR. For sale is a very nice 1910-20's Piedmont Tobacco Double-Sided Porcelain Folding Wooden Deck Chair. When unfolded, this advertisement deck chair measures 31" tall, 16"wide, and 15"deep. Both porcelain surfaces on this chair are in exceptional condition. Porcelain text reads: "Smoke Piedmont the Cigarette of Quality." There are some small cracks, some wood missing at the joints. It is very strong and sturdy and can be sat on. Wooden seat slats are in great condition. It even still has the Piedmont Cigarette stencil on each side of the chair. From the 1880s until the 1950s, porcelain advertising signs was one of the dominant forms of outdoor advertising because porcelain was so durable and weather-resistant. The exact age of this chair is unknown but is believed to be around 100 years old. This chair was manufactured by the Simmons Company, Kenosha, Wisconsin. In 1870, Zalmon G. Simmons opened his first factory in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He started out by manufacturing wooden telegraph insulators and cheese boxes. He branched into making bedsprings after receiving a patent for a woven-wire bedspring in payment of a debt. In 1876, Simmons became the first manufacturer to mass-produce woven wire mattresses. Simmons also made wooden folding chairs. These chairs were very popular for use in churches, schools, social halls and theaters. From an era long gone. I have other advertising for sale.
